Meet Our Fellows: Elizabeth Hill ('98)

Who or what inspired you to work in public service?

I was a California State Scholarship recipient which enabled me to attend college. This public support made we want to give back and, following an internship in Sacramento, I became convinced I could make a difference in public service.

What is something you are excited about right now?

As a pandemic project, I have been studying my family history. The resiliency of Americans to overcome economic and personal hardship, including my relatives, and strive for a better life is inspiring to me.

What is your favorite class you have ever taught or took and why?

My favorite class in graduate school was Political Organizations because it helped me frame issues and solutions for busy policy makers and write for a client. This class was useful to me every day of my three-decade plus career.

What inspires you during these challenging times?

I am inspired by the ingenuity, creativity, and dedication of individuals in the face of an historic pandemic and the many acts of human kindness that people show despite the pressures of current life.

What advice can you give to folks beginning careers in public service?

Credibility takes time to establish but can be lost in an instant. Listen to all points of view and be willing to acknowledge and own mistakes.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

Keep your bags packed. Be prepared to leave when you are asked to do something that would compromise your integrity.
