Biography

During a 32-year career as an American Foreign Service Officer, Ambassador Ridgway served, among other positions, as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, Ambassador to the German Democratic Republic, Counselor of the Department, Ambassador to Finland, and Ambassador for Oceans and Fisheries Affairs. In recognition of her contributions to American foreign policy, Ambassador Ridgway received many awards in her diplomatic career, including the Presidential Citizens Achievement Medal and, twice, the Presidential Distinguished Performance Award. Her honors from the State Department included, among others, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished Honor Award.

After her retirement in 1989, Ambassador Ridgway was associated with the Atlantic Council of the United States for 6 years. She is now the non-executive Chairman of the Baltic-American Enterprise Fund and serves on the Board of Directors of the Boeing Company, Emerson Electric, 3M, Manpower, Inc., Sara Lee, and three mutual funds in the American Funds family, and is a Trustee of the National Geographic Society.
